Temperature guide for sleepy time

Article by Tess Dixon

With the changing of seasons, it can be hard to know what to dress your wee one in for night sleeps and day-time naps.  It is often said that baby should wear one extra layer than mum, but this never made much sense to me because my own temperature would often fluctuate depending on how tired or hungry I was feeling that day.  So, I created a table to help me figure out how many layers my precious bubba would need during the changing seasons.

A couple of rules I always stuck by were:

  • Baby should always be dressed in natural materials such as cotton, Merino wool or bamboo, especially for sleeping. Materials such as polar fleece can over heat baby easily and don’t allow the body to ‘breath’.
  • If in doubt, undress your bubba and they will wake to let you know if they are too cold. An overheated baby can be dangerous as this makes them too drowsy to wake for feeds
  • Placing a thermometer in baby’s room helps gauge what garments and covers baby will need. These can be easily purchased from any baby shop or The Warehouse-type store, and they aren’t too expensive!
