Father’s Day rolls around each year on the first Sunday in September. Often we are led to believe we must buy Dad a present to say thank you. But we’re here to tell you that while presents are wonderful, there are other wonderful ways you can celebrate Dad on his special day instead.
Celebrate Your Hero This Father’s Day
There is no denying it, Dads are better than superheroes because they:
• are not afraid to wear fairy wings and play dress up
• have the patience of a saint with kids who won’t stop talking
• have strong arms which don’t get tired, perfect for settling screaming babies
• get up and feed or settle babies in the middle of the night
• can give you fancy and unique hairstyles
• can fix everything!
• have super corny jokes
• love playing outside in the mud and sandpit
• let you play with hammer and nails
• love playing sport with us
All too often the role which our partners and husbands play in the lives of our children is sadly diminished. Traditionally seen as the breadwinner and occasional babysitter, Dads do far much more than we give them credit for. This Father’s Day, let’s encourage our children to come up with their own way to celebrate Dad.
Fabulous Ways to Say, “Thank You Dad”
This year, encourage your children to make a present for Dad rather than buying one. We’ve made a list of some of our favourite ideas:
• Put on a puppet show for Dad. Make hand puppets out of his old socks and either retell a favourite story or make one up. You can even have Dad as the star of the show.
• Create a photo collage. Look through your photos and choose ones which remind you of all the ways your Dad has helped you. Glue them onto canvas or cardboard.
• Give Dad a gift voucher. Rather than a store brought voucher, make one for Dad instead. Get some paper and felt pens, decorate a piece of paper and write down on it something you will give Dad. Maybe you’ll pick up your toys rather than having him do it. Perhaps you’ll take the dog for a walk so he can watch the rugby instead?
• Make him a card. Forget buying one, make Dad a card instead. If you scan the card, he’ll also be able to use it as a screensaver on his PC or phone too!
With all the unconditional love and kindness Dads show us all, make sure you take the time to call, visit or spend an hour with Dad on his special day. We love you Dad!
